“Honor among thieves, y’know?” said Burn, some time later. They’d been escorted out of the hospital under the false auspices of Zeph and Wolfgang, to a remarkably understated getaway vehicle that nonetheless drove like it was trying to jump twelve school buses. Now they were at the Car Crew’s Car Headquarters, where exactly none of the cars were understated. (The getaway van was parked outside. Vera had nodded approvingly and pointed out it would ruin the aesthetic.)

“Yeah, you did us a solid. Got us our score and helped deal with that dog thing that showed up to wreck our score.”

Charlie shot Vera a warning look. Vera was already looking in her direction, eyebrows raised, the picture of innocence. Or at least the picture next to innocence, marked “antonyms.”

“Where’d you get your toys, anyway?”

They’d also retrieved all of Vera and Charlie’s gear. Charlie wasn’t sure how they’d accomplished that. She assumed cars, somehow.

“Ah, well—”

“Another dimension,” Vera said. They all turned to look at her, Charlie included. Although, in retrospect, what the hell else was she going to run with? They’d all seen the giant mechanical horrordog, and at least two tears. They laid it out for their new friends.

“So when one of these things opens…someone’s gotta get on that shit, fast, shut it down.”

“By going through it. To somewhere else entirely.”

“Hell, we’re always saying we could do with a vacation. Any way to pick where we end up? I could go for a beach and ladies dimension, y’know?”

“If I could pick the beach and ladies dimension, I would be in the beach and ladies dimension,” Vera said. “I mean, I can’t say I wouldn’t have stopped here first. Those are some nice cars.”

The Car Crew preened a little.

“It’s also more complicated than just going through it,” Charlie felt compelled to add. She glanced pointedly at Vera. “There can be…side effects.”

“Side effects?” asked Loa, a woman Charlie had seen jump out of a speeding car, through the window of another speeding car, and land without a scratch in the correct seat, all while dodging an evil robot dog and a fucking tear in the fabric of reality.

Charlie rethought her stance. Caution clearly didn’t apply to these people. “Which one of you is the tech person?”
